A Bahraini court has upheld a 15-year prison sentence against a 32-year-old woman convicted of human trafficking, involving exploitation and unlawful confinement of an Asian victim. The High Criminal Court also ordered her permanent deportation.

The ruling came during proceedings to review an objection to an earlier in absentia judgment. The case was adjourned to April 13 to appoint defence counsel and hear further arguments.

According to the Public Prosecution, the offences took place between August and November 2019, when the defendant allegedly recruited, transported and harboured the victim for exploitation. She is also accused of detaining the victim for over a month and using threats to force her into prostitution for financial gain.

Case records show the victim travelled to Bahrain after being promised a job as a food server through a recruitment agency. Upon arrival, she was taken between hotels, held against her will and forced into prostitution.
