Capital Council Pushes Structured Plan for Agricultural Waste Management

A comprehensive proposal to strengthen agricultural waste management in the Kingdom has been put forward. It aims to establish a structured and sustainable framework that enhances environmental cleanliness and supports food security objectives.

Submitted by Municipal Council member Engineer Mohammed Tawfiq Al Abbas at the Capital Municipal Council, the proposal calls for developing an integrated system to govern the collection, transport and safe disposal or recycling of agricultural waste. This move reflects growing concern over waste accumulation in farming areas and its impact on public health, agricultural productivity and the general urban landscape.

The proposal highlights the absence of clearly designated collection sites and the need for an approved regulatory framework that defines responsibilities among the relevant authorities. It recommends identifying geographically distributed waste collection centres to ensure accessibility for farmers while improving operational efficiency and reducing environmental risks.

In addition, it stresses the importance of adopting recognised environmental standards and promoting environmentally friendly farming practices. Periodic coordination meetings between municipalities and concerned government entities are also suggested to monitor implementation and address emerging challenges.

According to the proposal, the initiative would contribute to reducing pollution, improving the visual appearance of agricultural areas and reinforcing institutional cooperation. It also aligns with Bahrain’s broader sustainability agenda and efforts to enhance environmental governance while safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
