The Council of Representatives approved a draft law amending provisions of the Military Pension Law, marking a significant step towards strengthening protection for military retirees and their families. The decision reflects Parliament’s recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and the need to ensure stability and dignity after retirement.
The approved amendments seek to update existing pension arrangements in line with changing social and economic conditions. MPs stressed that military service carries unique responsibilities and risks, which must be reflected in pension legislation that provides adequate security for retirees, widows and dependants.
During deliberations, MPs raised several observations on the importance of safeguarding military pension rights. MP Abdulhakim Al Sheno highlighted the long standing role of the armed forces in national stability and called for timely implementation of benefits, including anticipated increases awaited by retirees. MP Khalid Saleh Buanaq questioned delays in decision making and urged greater transparency in assessing financial impact. MP Mohamed Mohamed Al Riffaei focused on cost calculations and the need for accurate figures to ensure confidence in the system. MP Basma Abdulkarim stressed that widows and dependants should not bear the burden of financial adjustments, while MP Mohamed Moosa Mohamed underlined that limited and well structured benefits would not place undue strain on pension funds. MP Hesham Abdulaziz Al Awadhi called for clearer documentation of committee decisions to maintain public trust.
MPs agreed that financial sustainability must be balanced with social responsibility. They stressed that reforming military pensions should not be viewed solely through a fiscal lens, but as part of a wider commitment to those who served the country.
Following parliamentary approval, the draft law will be referred to the Shura Council, as attention turns to finalising the legislative process and ensuring timely implementation for eligible beneficiaries.
