The First High Criminal Court has begun the trial of an Asian man in his forties accused of attempting to smuggle banned tobacco into the country by hiding it inside shipments of onions.

The court set February 2 as the next hearing date to bring the defendant from detention and allow him to review and respond to the charges.

According to a customs officer at the seaport, the shipment arrived from an Asian country and was declared as onions.

During inspection, the officer noticed unusual sizes and placed the shipment through an X-ray scanner. The scan revealed a different color inside the onions.

After opening the bags, officers discovered that the onions were stuffed with “tambak,” a type of banned chewing tobacco.

Customs officers seized 11,110 bags of the illegal substance, weighing a total of 1,035 kilograms. The shipment was valued at 19,925 dinars and handed over to the relevant customs authorities.

A customs clearance agent testified that the defendant contacted him about importing an onion shipment and provided all required documents and paid the fees.
