Bahrain’s Ashura blood donation campaign deepened its impact this year, collecting 646 blood bags over the eighth and ninth days of Muharram, bringing its cumulative total to 17,172 since its launch in 2000.
This year’s efforts saw 64 units collected on women’s day and 582 units on men’s day, under the campaign slogan ‘Blood in Your Name’.
It was organised with the support of the Ministry of Health’s Central Blood Bank and, for the second year, with Al Hilal Healthcare Group at its Manama Central branch.
A new mandatory online booking system played a key role in raising turnout. It allowed donors to schedule slots with greater ease.
Dr Fadel Al-Nasheet, head of the organising committee, said the campaign drew significant public response rooted in Muharram’s values of sacrifice and giving.
He expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Health, Government Hospitals led by minister H.E. Dr. Jalila bint Al Sayyed Jawad Hassan Jawad, and the Central Blood Bank for their ongoing backing.
The campaign launch was attended by Dr Ejlal Faisal Al Alawi, CEO of Primary Healthcare Centres, and Dr. Rajaa Sayed Hassan Al Yousif, Deputy Chief Executive of Government Hospitals.
The team also honoured deceased volunteers through social media tributes.
Dr Sharath Chandran, CEO of Al Hilal Healthcare Group, said hosting the country’s oldest community blood drive reflects the group’s commitment to serving public needs through partnerships.
Hamid Rahma, Chairman of Al-Naeem Charity Association, described the campaign as a humanitarian initiative rooted in Husseini values and embedded in community life.
From rising numbers and new tech to volunteer remembrance, Bahrain’s Ashura blood drive has shown how tradition, innovation, and civic unity can sustain a more than 25-year legacy.
