A man who attacked his former partner with a hammer after she told him their relationship was over has been jailed for 10 years and will be deported once his sentence is complete.
She had invited him to her flat in what she believed would be a calm and familiar visit. Instead, the meeting turned violent.
He brought a hammer and he used it.
Hearing
The High Criminal Court heard that the 43-year-old African national struck her several times, knocking her to the floor.
He continued to hit her until she could no longer resist, believing he had killed her. He then began cleaning the blood from the floor.
Before he could do more, someone knocked at the door. A second man, sent by a mutual acquaintance to help the woman with a gas cylinder, had arrived.
After knocking repeatedly, he was startled when the woman emerged from inside, covered in blood. She ran past him and escaped.
Attacker
He stepped inside and found the attacker with blood-stained clothes, and the attacker fled.
The defendant later denied the charge. He said he had been living in Bahrain since 2014 and was employed by a private firm.
He told the court that he and the victim had been in a romantic relationship for about a year.
Relationship
According to him, she had recently asked to end the relationship and remain friends.
He said he was not angry and that she had invited him to her flat for lunch. He claimed he tried to persuade her to change her mind but failed.
