Parliament will on Tuesday open a public discussion into the performance of the Sunni and Jaafari Waqf administrations, turning the spotlight on how religious endowments are handled, rented out, and invested.
The motion, brought forward by 10 MPs, presses for answers on the methods and choices both bodies have made in managing property portfolios, from real estate development and marketing to rent collection and the placement of funds in local and overseas markets.
Bank deposits and other assets are also up for review, with questions over whether returns are being steered in line with the stated goals of the Waqf institutions.
Tenders
Maintenance works on mosques and other endowment properties will also come under the microscope, including how tenders have been awarded and whether the procedures have been clean and in good order.
