The National Space Science Agency (NSSA) actively participated in the inaugural edition of the “Sustainable Space Days” event, organized by the United Nations and the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
The event, held in Vienna, brought together a team of NSSA experts, engineers, and legal professionals to engage in discussions focused on space sustainability and safety.
The event featured a range of activities, including simulations of spacecraft collisions with space debris, educational workshops on space situational awareness, best practices for information exchange, and strategies for coordinating space traffic.
Challenges
These sessions aimed to address the growing challenges posed by the increasing congestion in Earth’s orbit.
Commenting on the significance of NSSA’s participation, His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Asiri, CEO of the National Space Science Agency, stated, “The steady increase in satellite launches and the competitive race among companies to dominate key space services have raised serious concerns about the sustainability of space.”
Dr. Al-Asiri elaborated, “Imagine hundreds of thousands of space objects, including debris and active satellites, traveling at speeds faster than a bullet. Each of these objects, regardless of size, has the potential to destroy spacecraft or endanger astronauts’ lives on board.”
