Gas cylinders are ticking time-bombs in Capital

ManamaThe violation of gas cylinder rules continues to be a major threat to human safety in most parts of the Capital area. In spite of cylinder explosions and repeated warnings several restaurants still continue to violate the rules.

“I live in Shaikh Abdulla Avenue with my family, and I have personally told a few restaurant owners in the area to keep a gas cylinders in safer places as it is a threat to the people living around that area. But they don’t listen to us and continue neglect the law. Most of the gas cylinders do not have the protective valve guard or caps. This is a violation of safety rules and puts the life of road users and communities at great risk. We really urge the government to take the necessary steps to solve the issue immediately,” said a resident in the area.

“We agree that there is an issue. It’s not only in the capital but also a lot of areas across the Kingdom. The Capital Municipal Council is working along with civil defence and other ministries to resolve this issue immediately, “ said Mazen Ahmad Al-Omran, Vice Chairman of Capital Municipal Council.

“I agree that it is a very hazardous issue but we can’t just shut the restaurants. We have had officials conduct inspections in areas in the capital to give them a warning. W are also trying to speed up the revamp of the souq area as soon as possible as we realise the damage it can cause. It is not just the gas cylinders, the sewage issue also has been creating a problem as the oils from the restaurant are drained out straight into the sewage system which can cause major blockage in the drainage,” he added.

The department has asked these restaurants to regularly maintain the gas cylinders and abide by the rules to avoid legal action.

Anyway, restaurants are not allowed to keep gas cylinders vertically. If the owner of the restaurant fails to comply, the department will issues a warning to do so. Offences will bring legal action as these can cause a serious threat to the public safety.
