Anzhi sack Czech coach Vrba after six months

Prague : Russian top-flight side Anzhi Makhachkala have sacked Czech coachPavel Vrba after six months, the Czech Football Association said Thursday.

"The Russian club has changed hands amid financial problems and started to sell out the team," the association said on its website.

"A source close to the coach has confirmed Vrba's departure within the recent austerity measures," it added.

Vrba signed up with Anzhi in June and led the team to the current 11th spot in the 16-member Russian Premier League with five wins, five draws and seven losses.

Before joining Anzhi, the 53-year-old Vrba coached the Czech Republic national team which he led to Euro 2016.

But he came under fire over poor showings at the tournament where the team lost to Spain and Turkey and drew with Croatia, bowing out afterthe group stage.

Vrba's coaching career took an upward twist in 2008, when he took overCzech top-flight strugglers Viktoria Pilsen and led them to league titles in 2011 and 2013, earning a spot in the Champions League each time.
