Nine former Assad-era pilots held over alleged war crimes in Syria

Damascus: Syrian authorities arrested nine former military pilots accused of war crimes committed during the reign of deposed President Bashar al-Assad, in the latest crackdown on former regime officials.

The arrests were made by internal security forces in Latakia, in collaboration with the counterterrorism division, following surveillance and intelligence gathering activities. Authorities stated the suspects included senior leaders from Syria's fighter and helicopter forces.

According to Syrian security officials, the pilots are suspected of participating in air raids and attacks on towns and cities during the civil conflict. According to reports, the actions resulted in deaths and injuries, destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure, and displacement of inhabitants.

The nine prisoners include three brigadier generals, as well as officers with the rank of colonel, lieutenant-colonel, and captain. According to authorities, investigations are ongoing, and anybody found accountable will face prosecution.

The arrests come as Syria's post-Assad authorities ramp up efforts to pursue former regime members accused of violations committed during the fight. Assad was deposed and departed Syria in December 2024, ending his family's decades-longdynasty.
