UN nuclear watchdog reports Iran to Security Council after 20 years

Vienna: The UN nuclear watchdog has reported Iran to the Security Council for the first time in 20 years, accusing Tehran of failing to cooperate with an investigation into uranium traces found at undeclared sites.
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s 35-member board approved the move with 23 votes in favour, while Russia, China and Niger opposed it. Eight countries abstained.
The US, Britain, France and Germany backed the resolution. The move could expose Iran to sanctions and asset freezes, although Russia and China could block punitive action through their Security Council vetoes.
Iran rejected the decision as politically motivated, insisting its nuclear programme is peaceful. Tehran also said inspections are currently impossible because of the ongoing war with the US and Israel.
The IAEA has warned about Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium and said it cannot fully verify the status of the country’s nuclear programme.
