15 Tigray Fighters Found Dead Near Sudan Border After Clashes

Hamdayet, Sudan: The bodies of 15 Tigray rebel fighters have been recovered from a river along the Sudan-Ethiopia border after renewed fighting between Ethiopian federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), according to a medical source.

The hospital in the Sudanese border area also received six wounded people, while more Ethiopians crossed into Sudan in recent days to escape the violence.

The latest clashes broke out in northern Ethiopia over the weekend. The TPLF accused the Ethiopian government of launching a large-scale ground offensive, although Ethiopian authorities have not commented on the allegation. The rebels said the fighting ended on Sunday without releasing casualty figures.

Residents in Sudan reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions during the confrontation. Witnesses also said wounded people arriving from Ethiopia were being sheltered in the border town of Hamdayet.

The renewed violence has raised concerns over fresh instability in northern Ethiopia, where a devastating conflict between 2020 and 2022 killed at least 600,000 people, according to the African Union.

Relations between Ethiopia and Sudan remain strained, with both countries accusing each other in recent months of supporting hostile armed groups. The latest fighting comes as Sudan continues to grapple with its own civil war, which has displaced millions of people.
