Venezuela Opposition Leader Rejects US-Backed Talks with Interim Government

Caracas: Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado has rejected plans to take part in US-backed talks with the interim government of Delcy Rodríguez scheduled for August.
Machado and opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia said they would not be involved in the talks’ planning, organisation or operation.
The discussions were announced by Rodríguez’s government and former opposition lawmakers as part of a plan to strengthen democracy in Venezuela. Washington has described the initiative as an important step towards political reconciliation.
Machado continues to support González Urrutia’s claim that he won Venezuela’s disputed 2024 presidential election, despite Nicolás Maduro being declared the winner amid fraud allegations. She has also accused the interim government of preventing her return to the country after devastating earthquakes last month killed more than 5,000 people.
