MEXICO CITY: Temoac Mayor Valentín Lavín was shot dead inside the town hall in Mexico's central state of Morelos on Wednesday, months after surviving an earlier assassination attempt. Authorities confirmed the killing and said police and forensic teams were investigating while a manhunt for those responsible was underway.

Lavín, an ally of President Claudia Sheinbaum's ruling party, had survived an armed attack in January, according to local reports. His latest killing has renewed concerns over the safety of public officials in regions affected by organised crime, particularly in Morelos, where several drug cartels operate.

The assassination adds to a long list of attacks on local leaders in Mexico. Official figures show that nearly 100 mayors have been murdered since 2006, reflecting the continuing grip of criminal violence across parts of the country.
