China Says AI Should Not Be Dominated by One Country

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping declared Friday that artificial intelligence must not be dominated by any single nation, calling instead for an era of global cooperation.

Speaking at the opening of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Xi urged nations to reject overstretching national security concepts to restrict AI advancement.

The appeal coincided with China and twenty-nine other countries, including Russia, Pakistan, and Indonesia, agreeing to establish the Shanghai-headquartered World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization. This initiative aims to foster healthy development, though Western nations remain absent as they establish their own independent regulations.

To guard against potential security threats, Xi advocated for a ‘people-centric’ approach featuring robust laws, monitoring, and early warning systems. He stressed that these international frameworks are vital to guarantee that rapidly evolving technologies always remain under human control.

Meanwhile, Chinese tech firms are actively closing the gap with US competitors. Affordable and highly customizable Chinese open-source AI models are increasingly attracting global corporate users, contrasting with closed US systems that face mounting scrutiny over potential infrastructure hacks.
