Paris: Doctors, trade unionists, and pro-Palestinian activists protested outside France's foreign ministry, demanding the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the head of Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital, who has been in Israeli captivity since December 2024.
Around 50 people attended the rally, chanting ‘Free Dr. Abu Safiya’ and urging French officials to step up diplomatic efforts to win his release. Hospital unions, as well as notable emergency physician Patrick Pelloux, supported the protest.
Dr. Abu Safiya was detained after Israeli forces raided the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. His incarceration has sparked significant alarm among international medical and human rights organisations, which have called for his immediate release and questioned his treatment in custody.
The incident reflects growing international concern over the safety of healthcare professionals in conflict zones, with protesters calling for respect for international humanitarian law and the release of imprisoned medical workers.
