Oslo: Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been discharged from the hospital following a successful lung transplant, the Norwegian royal family announced on Tuesday. The 52 years old queen had the surgery in June after her pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung ailment she has been fighting since 2018, worsened substantially.
In a statement, Mette-Marit thanked the medical team, the organ donor, the donor's family, and the public for their assistance during her recuperation. Crown Prince Haakon said her return home was a ‘great relief’ for the family.
Doctors say the transplant was successful, but the Crown Princess will need a long period of rehabilitation and regular medical check-ups before gradually returning to public duties. As the illness worsened, she was forced to minimise her royal duties in recent years.
