Paris: Rare personal belongings of legendary Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela are set to be auctioned in Paris on Thursday, offering fans a rare glimpse into the world of one of fashion's most private figures.

The sale includes sketches, Margiela's white work coat, prototype runway face masks, Barbie dolls used as mannequins and Hermès pieces he designed between 1997 and 2003, which were gifted to his late mother.

More than 3,000 people have visited the exhibition ahead of the auction, with collectors, museums and buyers, particularly from Japan, expected to bid.

Margiela, who retired in 2009, personally supervised the sale, which organisers say is his way of preserving his legacy while deciding the future of items that have become part of fashion history.
