ROME: Italian police have arrested two individuals, including a former national intelligence community member, on charges of spying for Russia.

The suspects allegedly disclosed classified information to a suspected Russian intelligence officer who held diplomatic immunity within Italy.

The 59-year-old former Italian agent allegedly gathered and passed along the sensitive data in exchange for money. The security breach involved six separate sources, including four active-duty military personnel who were assigned to highly confidential posts.

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed gratitude to the Carabinieri police for managing the highly complex and sensitive investigation.

He stated that there would be zero tolerance toward anyone who compromises the security of the republic, particularly those holding positions of responsibility. Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the second arrested individual.
