Hanoi : Vietnamese police have arrested 85 people linked to two major illegal betting networks that handled an estimated $133 million in transactions as authorities intensified their crackdown on World Cup gambling.
Police said the two betting rings had been operating since October through a tightly organised network. Investigators found the operators obtained master betting accounts from individuals in Cambodia before distributing them through multiple agent and member accounts to online gamblers.
Online gambling is illegal in Vietnam, but underground betting typically surges during major international sporting events.
Last week, the Ministry of Public Security said police had dismantled 73 illegal gambling operations and arrested 346 suspects during the first 20 days of the FIFA World Cup.
