Asunción : Paraguay's government has condemned racist remarks made by Senator Celeste Amarilla against France captain Kylian Mbappé following Paraguay's 1-0 defeat to France in the FIFA World Cup.

Amarilla targeted Mbappé on social media with racist insults after the match, prompting a strong response from the French forward. Mbappé called the senator 'despicable' and said she was 'not worthy' of holding public office, adding that she did not represent Paraguay or its people.

In a statement, Paraguay's foreign ministry said the senator's comments were contrary to the country's values and respect for human dignity, stressing that they did not reflect the views of the Paraguayan government or its citizens.

The remarks also drew widespread condemnation in France. President Emmanuel Macron expressed support for Mbappé, while Sports Minister Marina Ferrari described the comments as disgraceful. FIFA President Gianni Infantino also denounced the abuse and called for a united stand against racism in football.

Mbappé, whose second-half penalty secured France's place in the World Cup quarter-finals against Morocco, said Paraguay's players had shown passion and honour throughout the tournament despite the senator's remarks.
