Brussels: The European Union will begin implementing its side of a trade agreement with the United States on Wednesday, bringing into effect measures aimed at reducing transatlantic trade tensions and preventing a larger tariff conflict. The legislation was formally accepted and published in the EU's Official Journal, allowing the group to carry out its commitments under the agreement.
The agreement eliminates EU import levies on a variety of US industrial goods, expands preferential access for certain American agricultural products, and maintains duty-free imports of US lobster. EU officials said the measures are aimed to deepen commercial connections with Washington while giving more stability for firms on both sides of the Atlantic.
The regulation will be in effect until the end of 2029, with the option of being extended following a review. It also includes safeguard provisions that allow the EU to suspend trade benefits if the United States fails to fulfil its duties under the agreement.
The decision follows months of talks between Brussels and Washington to resolve trade concerns that had threatened to grow into a larger tariff fight. EU leaders have praised the agreement as a significant step toward ensuring stable and predictable trade relations with the United States.
