Caracas: The wife and two children of Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo were died after powerful twin earthquakes devastated Venezuela's La Guaira state. Their bodies were found after a 3 day search through the rubble of their collapsed apartment complex.
Trejo, 38, was in Caracas with his club, Club Sport Marítimo La Guaira, when the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes hit on June 24. He raced to the disaster area to join relatives, teammates, and rescue workers in their search for his family.
The club released a statement confirming the deaths and expressing condolences and support to the defender. The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of compassion from the whole football community.
The earthquakes have killed about 1,500 people and left tens of thousands missing, making it one of Venezuela's deadliest natural catastrophes in recent memory, while rescue efforts continue.
