Washington DC: The UN wants a ‘massive re-think’ of US immigration enforcement around the World Cup to guarantee the global sporting tournament remains accessible and inclusive. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk explicitly urged the United States on Wednesday to immediately reconsider its border entry practices.
His public warning directly addresses a series of recent incidents where numerous traveling fans, team officials, and even a top referee found themselves completely barred from entering the host country.
Speaking to journalists in Geneva, Türk emphasized that soccer tournaments must serve as spaces of unity rather than exclusion. He stressed that international mega-events demand flexible visa protocols to prevent severe logistical disruptions and human rights complaints.
The problematic lead-in has heightened global scrutiny over Washington's stringent border measures, as international representatives warn that rigid immigration policing actively threatens the open and collaborative spirit of FIFA's premier global competition.
