Rebel Attack Kills 7 Civilians in Eastern Congo, Triggering Protests

Beni, DR Congo: At least seven people were killed in an attack blamed on militants linked to the Islamic State group in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, sparking protests from residents who accused security forces of failing to protect civilians.

The overnight attack took place between the localities of Ngadi and Mavivi near the city of Beni in North Kivu province. According to the Congolese army, six civilians were killed and a soldier died while pursuing the attackers.

Military officials blamed the assault on the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), an armed group originally formed in Uganda that now operates in eastern Congo and has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. The group has been responsible for numerous deadly attacks in the mineral-rich region over the years.

Local residents said the attackers targeted a camp inhabited by Pygmy families. Community members reported that several victims were killed during the raid and that some bodies remained in nearby forests, making recovery efforts difficult. Among those killed was a popular local artist.

Survivors described scenes of panic as gunmen entered the camp late at night and forced residents from their homes. Some managed to escape, while others were captured and killed.

The attack prompted demonstrations in Beni on Sunday, with residents carrying the bodies of victims through the streets and voicing anger at the military's response. Protesters accused security forces of arriving too late to prevent the killings.

Violence remains a major challenge in eastern Congo, where armed groups have operated for decades despite military operations aimed at restoring security. Since 2021, Ugandan troops have been deployed alongside Congolese forces to combat the ADF, but deadly attacks on civilians continue to occur across the region.
