Russia Asks Armenia to Hold Vote on EU Membership

Astana, Kazakhstan: Russia and its allies have called on Armenia to hold a referendum as soon as possible on whether it wants to join the European Union or remain in the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
Speaking at a summit in Kazakhstan, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Armenia would eventually have to choose between the two blocs, arguing that membership in both was not possible.
The move comes as Armenia deepens ties with the EU after years of growing frustration with Russia's security support. Armenia froze its participation in Russian-led security arrangements in 2024 and later passed a law declaring its intention to seek EU membership.
Despite the shift, Armenia remains a member of the EAEU. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has pursued a policy of balancing ties with both Russia and the West.
