Zelenskyy Urges US To Boost Air Defences As Russia Intensifies Attacks

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on the United States to provide more advanced air defence systems, saying Russia’s missile capabilities remain Moscow’s “last major advantage” in the war.
In appeals directed at President Donald Trump and the US Congress, Zelenskyy said Ukraine urgently needs additional Patriot missile systems and interceptor missiles to counter increasing Russian ballistic missile attacks.
Ukrainian officials said recent Russian strikes involved dozens of ballistic missiles, with air defences intercepting only part of the barrage. Kyiv warned that continued missile attacks are placing heavy pressure on the country’s defence systems and civilian infrastructure.
The appeal comes as fighting continues across eastern and northeastern Ukraine. Russia has continued announcing the capture of villages in regions including Donetsk and Sumy, although Ukrainian forces have disputed some of those claims and said Russian advances have slowed in recent weeks.
Ukraine has increasingly relied on long-range drone strikes and Western-supplied weapons to target Russian military and energy infrastructure deep inside Russian territory. Analysts say Kyiv’s growing drone capabilities have helped slow Russian offensives and increase pressure on Moscow.
Military experts and Western intelligence officials have also pointed to growing strain on Russian forces after more than four years of war, with heavy battlefield losses and mounting economic pressure.
Zelenskyy said stronger air defences would not only help protect Ukrainian cities but could also push Russia toward more serious diplomatic negotiations.
