Brussels: A devastating collision between a train and a school minibus has left four people dead, including two children, during the morning rush hour in northern Belgium.

The tragic accident occurred at around 8:08 am at a level crossing near Buggenhout station, located roughly 30 kilometers northwest of Brussels.

According to authorities, the minibus was carrying nine passengers from a local special needs school. The victims include two teenagers, the bus driver, and an additional adult, while five other children were rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

Local rail network operators confirmed that security footage shows the crossing barriers were down and traffic lights were red at the time of the crash.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated she was ‘heartbroken’ by the tragedy, extending her deepest condolences to the victims' families.
