Rennes: Two teens have been arrested after an 11-year-old child was discovered dead on the banks of the Vilaine River in Rennes, northeastern France, according to authorities. The child was found with a wet bath towel tightly tied around his neck, leading police to initiate a homicide inquiry.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested at his house, and a 15-year-old girl later handed herself in to the police. Rennes prosecutor Frédéric Teillet stated that both of them were spotted with the victim on the afternoon of the incident and are being held on suspicion of murdering the minor. Authorities also stated that the victim was 11 years old, contradicting previous reports that listed him as 12.
A fisherman reported hearing a child crying along the river following authorities found the boy's body. Emergency workers hurried to the site, but were unable to save him. Divers and forensic experts have subsequently searched the area for evidence as investigators attempt to figure out the circumstances of the incident.
Officials have not revealed a suspected motive, and the victim's relationship with the two accused is uncertain. The inquiry is being led by a specialised crime section, and investigators are still looking into whether anyone else is involved.
