London: The former UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has been cleared by the UK tax authority, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), in a long-running investigation into her financial affairs, according to a report by Le Monde.
The case involved scrutiny over a property transaction that had previously led to controversy and political fallout, including her resignation from government in 2025 after she admitted underpaying stamp duty on a home purchase.
HMRC concluded that there was no deliberate wrongdoing or intent to evade tax. The former minister has since settled the outstanding amount and was not issued any penalties following the review.
She expressed relief at being cleared, saying the decision brought closure after months of public scrutiny that had also affected her personal and political life.
The investigation had cast a shadow over her future in frontline politics, with speculation that it could block any return to senior leadership roles. With the matter now resolved, political observers say her position within the Labour Party could be reconsidered, though internal party tensions remain high amid wider leadership debates.
The case adds to ongoing political turbulence in the UK, where several senior figures have faced scrutiny over financial and ethical issues in recent years.
