Kyiv: Andriy Yermak, the former chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has dismissed corruption allegations against him as ‘unfounded’. 

Following a court hearing on Tuesday, the 54-year-old former aide vowed to defend his reputation and legal rights, asserting that his actions have always been guided by his thirty years of experience as a lawyer.

The allegations involve the suspected funneling of approximately $10 million as part of an organized crime group. Prosecutors claim the funds were used for construction at the ‘Dynasty’ cottage site, with the intent to legalize property obtained through criminal means. Yermak has denied these claims, stating publicly that he owns only one apartment and one car.

The investigation, nicknamed ‘Operation Midas,’ originally prompted Yermak’s resignation in November 2025 after a raid on his home. Anti-corruption investigators from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) maintain they have gathered sufficient evidence to ensure the charges stand up in court. The probe is part of a broader effort to address corruption involving top government officials in the war-torn nation.

This legal battle occurs against a backdrop of political tension regarding the independence of Ukraine's anti-corruption agencies. Last summer, the government’s attempt to strip the independence of NABU and SAPO triggered rare wartime protests.

These actions drew criticism from the European Union, a vital financial and military supporter, eventually forcing President Zelensky to reverse the decision.

As the case proceeds, Yermak remains firm in his innocence, using social media to communicate his defense to the public. Meanwhile, investigators and prosecutors held a surprise press conference just before Tuesday's hearing to defend the integrity of their ongoing investigation. The outcome of the trial is expected to have significant implications for Ukraine's domestic stability and international standing.
