EU pushes ‘One Journey, One Ticket’ plan to simplify rail travel

Brussels: Through a proposed "one journey, one ticket" system, the European Union is getting ready for significant reforms designed to simplify international train travel throughout Europe. Instead of buying individual tickets from several national train providers, the idea seeks to enable passengers to schedule cross-border rail travels including multiple train operators under a single ticket.
Supported by the European Commission, the plan would mandate that railway operators exchange ticketing and schedule information in a standard digital format. Passengers would find it simpler to compare itineraries, plan smooth travel, and get better insurance in the event of delays or missing connections.
The proposal is expected to become part of a larger EU rail modernisation package currently under discussion. At present, Europe's rail booking system is fragmented, with passengers frequently having to use multiple websites and tickets for a single trip. EU officials say the reforms are necessary to make train travel more convenient and encourage people to choose rail over short-haul flights as part of Europe's climate goals. The plan could significantly improve journeys like Paris–Rome or Berlin–Amsterdam by offering unified booking, clearer pricing, and stronger passenger rights. According to EU authorities, as part of Europe's climate ambitions, the adjustments are required to make train travel more comfortable and encourage people to prefer rail over short-haul flights.
With simplified booking, more transparent rates, and more solid passenger rights, the concept may greatly enhance international trips. However, certain rail companies can oppose competition laws and obligatory data-sharing.
The plan is expected to be included in a larger EU rail system upgrades package that is presently being discussed.
