Brasília: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday revealed a comprehensive new public security plan targeted at battling organised crime as the nation approaches the pivotal election in 2026.

In an attempt to dismantle strong criminal networks that operate throughout Brazil, the federal government will invest close to 11 billion reais (about $2 billion) to improve police, intelligence, border security, and prison surveillance.

The initiatives’ main objectives are dismantling gang financing, combating drug and weapon trafficking, widening homicide investigations, and increasing the use of modern security technologies like drones, DNA databases, scanners, and mobile blockers in jails.

Authorities will likely step up their efforts against some of the most powerful criminal groups in Brazil, such as the Red Command gangs and the PCC (First Command of the Capital), both of which are charged with strengthening their power through organised criminal activity and drug trafficking.

Speaking at the official launch in Brasília, Lula emphasised that public safety would continue to be a top national priority and stated that the government would not permit illicit organisations to control areas or threaten communities.

The declaration aligns with opposition leaders' growing criticism of the government's response to gang activity and bloodshed, as crime and public security emerge as significant electoral topics ahead of Brazil's 2026 elections.
