BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang has called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in West Asia during high-level discussions with his Iranian counterpart. In a phone conversation held on Thursday, Qin emphasized China's deep concern over the escalating regional tensions and the worsening humanitarian crisis.

He reiterated Beijing's stance that a political settlement is the only viable path to lasting peace, urging all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint to prevent a wider conflict.

The Chinese diplomat underscored the importance of implementing relevant UN Security Council resolutions and protecting civilian lives. Qin also reaffirmed China’s support for Iran in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security, while acknowledging Iran's role in maintaining regional stability.

This diplomatic outreach reflects China's growing ambition to act as a mediator in Middle Eastern affairs, positioning itself as a neutral party capable of facilitating dialogue between conflicting nations.

Iran's Foreign Minister expressed appreciation for China's constructive role and its efforts to promote regional de-escalation. Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication and coordination to address the complex security challenges facing the region.

As tensions remain high, Beijing continues to advocate for a "two-state solution" as the fundamental framework for resolving the core issues driving the current instability in West Asia.
