New Delhi: India has significantly accelerated its ambitions to become a global electronics powerhouse with the approval of two new semiconductor projects valued at $414 million. This recent development, cleared in early May 2026, marks a pivotal expansion of the country’s domestic chipmaking ecosystem, which began in earnest in 2021.

The newly sanctioned facilities, an integrated LED display fabrication plant and a semiconductor packaging unit bring the total number of approved facilities in the country to 12, representing a massive cumulative investment of approximately $17.2 billion.

The strategic importance of these projects lies in their ability to address critical gaps in the global value chain. The LED facility is designed to produce advanced mini and micro display modules, while the packaging unit is set to cater to the high-demand automotive, industrial, and electronics sectors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized that these advances are essential for fostering economic transformation and technological self-reliance, noting that they complement the ‘world-class chip design capabilities’ already emerging within the nation.

As India moves toward its goal of a $110 billion chip market by 2030, these investments serve to reduce heavy import dependence and strengthen global supply chains. With several previously approved plants already entering commercial production and starting shipments, India is steadily positioning itself as a resilient and competitive hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing.
