US wants 'concrete actions' on Iran from next Iraqi PM

Washington DC: The United States is demanding ‘concrete actions’ from Iraq's incoming Prime Minister, Ali al-Zaidi, to distance the government from pro-Iran armed groups. Washington has suspended vital financial shipments and security aid following more than 600 attacks on US facilities since late February.

To restore support, US officials insist that Zaidi must expel militias from state institutions and cut off their funding from the national budget.

While President Trump congratulated al-Zaidi on his nomination, the State Department maintains that a ‘new mindset’ is required to disentangle the state from these groups.

Washington seeks a clear policy statement affirming that these militias are not part of the Iraqi state. Currently, a fragile ceasefire remains in place, though regional tensions continue to impact US-Iraq diplomatic and financial relations.
