UAE Announces Exit from OPEC and OPEC+ Alliances

The United Arab Emirates has announced its decision to withdraw from both the OPEC and the OPEC+, with the move set to take effect from May 1, 2026.

According to the Emirates News Agency, the decision is part of the UAE’s long-term economic and strategic vision, reflecting ongoing developments within its energy sector. This includes increased investment in domestic production and a continued focus on maintaining its position as a reliable and forward-looking energy producer.

The report noted that the move follows a comprehensive assessment of the country’s production policies and future capacity, aligning with national priorities and its commitment to meeting rising global energy demand. It highlighted that ensuring a stable global energy system depends on the availability of flexible, dependable, and affordable supply.

The UAE emphasised that the decision represents an evolution in its energy strategy, allowing for greater flexibility in responding to market changes, while continuing to produce some of the world’s most competitive and lower-carbon oil. Production is expected to increase gradually in line with global supply and demand conditions.

The country also expressed appreciation for the role of OPEC and the OPEC+ alliance, noting its more than five decades of cooperation since joining OPEC in 1967. It reaffirmed that the decision will not affect its commitment to supporting global market stability or its collaborative approach with both producers and consumers worldwide.
