TEXAS: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced that the electric vehicle manufacturer has officially entered the production phase for its highly anticipated robotaxi. During a recent earnings call, Musk confirmed that the purpose-built autonomous vehicle is being manufactured using a revolutionary ‘unboxed’ assembly process, which aims to significantly reduce production costs and footprint.
Musk also shared the milestone on X, posting a video of the driverless ‘Cybercab’ rolling off the production line at Giga Texas with the caption, ‘Cybercab has started production.’ While he noted that the initial ramp-up would be slow due to the new supply chain, he emphasised that this marks a pivotal shift toward a fully autonomous transport network.
The robotaxi, designed without a steering wheel or pedals, is central to Tesla’s shift toward AI. Musk emphasised that the vehicle will operate on the company's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, envisioning a future where Tesla owners can add their cars to a shared autonomous fleet. While specific delivery timelines were not finalized, Musk stated that the move signals a ‘new chapter’ for the company’s growth.
