At least 5 killed after gunman opens fire in Ukrainian capital
At least five people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire in Kyiv, authorities confirmed.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the attacker targeted civilians before being neutralised by police forces. Ten people were reported injured and taken to hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Officials said the incident took place in the Holosiivskyi district, where the gunman also took hostages during the attack. Four hostages were successfully rescued as part of the emergency response.
Ihor Klymenko confirmed that security forces eliminated the assailant, while investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
City authorities, led by Vitali Klitschko, launched a special operation after the attacker reportedly entered a supermarket during the sequence of events.
Meanwhile, Ruslan Kravchenko identified the suspect as a 58-year-old individual originally from Moscow, who allegedly used automatic weapons. Reports also indicate that the attacker set fire to his registered residence before barricading himself inside a supermarket.
Ukrainian authorities stated that a full investigation is underway, involving national police and security services, as efforts continue to clarify the motive and details of the attack.
