US Naval Blockade on Iran Takes Effect After Deadline Passes

Washington DC: A US naval blockade on Iran has officially begun after a 14:00 UTC deadline passed, ending the grace period for neutral ships to leave Iranian ports.
The blockade was announced by Donald Trump after peace talks between the US and Iran — mediated by Pakistan — failed.
According to the US, the blockade covers waters in the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea, including areas east of the Strait of Hormuz, and applies to all ships, no matter their country.
Any ship entering or leaving Iranian ports without permission after the deadline could be stopped, redirected, or seized by US forces.
However, the US says ships can still pass through the Strait of Hormuz to reach non-Iranian ports, though they may be boarded and inspected for banned cargo.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations has warned ships in the region to stay alert and follow safety procedures, with more detailed guidelines expected soon.
In a related development, a tanker named Ostria turned back near the Strait of Hormuz as the blockade came into force.
