Over 200 arrested at pro-Palestinian rally in London
Police in London arrested more than 200 demonstrators during a pro-Palestinian protest held in Trafalgar Square on Saturday, according to official statements.
The demonstration was organised in support of Palestine Action, which has been banned by the UK government. Protesters staged a sit-in and displayed placards backing the group, prompting police action as public support for a proscribed organisation is considered a criminal offence under UK law.
The Metropolitan Police said a total of 212 people, aged between 27 and 82, were arrested during the protest. Officers were seen carrying away demonstrators as others clapped and cheered.
Palestine Action was officially designated a banned organisation last year, with membership or support carrying penalties of up to 14 years in prison. However, the High Court recently ruled that the ban interfered with freedom of speech, though the government is appealing the decision.
Authorities had temporarily paused arrests following the ruling but resumed enforcement in late March.
Organisers said around 500 people attended the protest, criticising the government’s stance and calling the crackdown on demonstrations unjustified. The issue has sparked ongoing legal and public debate across the UK.
