Djibouti City:Ismail Omar Guelleh has won another presidential term in Djibouti, securing a massive 97.8% of the vote, according to official results. The 78-year-old leader defeated his only challenger, Mohamed Farah Samatar, who received just 2.2%.

Guelleh, who has been in power since 1999, declared victory early and said, “By the grace of God, we have arrived here, and we hope that this will end in victory. He has ruled the country for over two decades and is known for turning Djibouti into a key military and shipping hub due to its strategic location.

The small nation hosts military bases from several countries, including the United States, China, France, Japan, and Italy, bringing economic and security benefits. Djibouti is also located near the Bab al-Mandeb, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.

Despite his strong grip on power, critics say the elections lack real competition, with opposition groups often weak or boycotting the vote. Human rights organisations have also raised concerns about restrictions on dissent.

The country faces economic challenges, including high unemployment—especially among young people—and rising debt, much of it linked to China. Still, some supporters view Guelleh’s leadership as a source of stability in a region often affected by conflict.
