MOSCOW: Overnight air strikes across Ukraine and Russia have resulted in the deaths of at least five people, including two children, as both nations intensify their long-range drone and missile campaigns. The surge in cross-border violence on Tuesday, has once again placed civilian populations at the center of the conflict.

In Ukraine, a Russian missile strike hit a residential neighborhood in the northern city of Sumy. Local authorities confirmed that a multi-story apartment complex was severely damaged, leading to the deaths of a 9-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. Rescue operations continued throughout the morning to assist those trapped in the debris, with more than a dozen injuries reported.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the strikes, stating that such attacks on residential areas underscore the urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities from international partners.

At the same time, Russian officials reported fatalities in the Belgorod border region following a wave of Ukrainian drone strikes. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported that three civilians were killed when a drone struck a vehicle near the frontier.

While Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted over 40 drones across the Belgorod, Voronezh, and Kursk regions, falling debris reportedly ignited fires at two localized fuel storage facilities.

The escalation marks a period of heightened aerial attrition, with international observers expressing grave concern over the increasing frequency of strikes on populated areas. Humanitarian organizations have noted that the persistent nature of these overnight attacks is causing a deepening psychological crisis for civilians, particularly children, on both sides of the border.
