WASHINGTON DC: U.S. President Donald Trump held a video call with the crew of the Artemis II mission on Tuesday, praising the four astronauts for their record-breaking journey around the Moon. Speaking from the Oval Office, the President congratulated NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canada’s Jeremy Hansen, telling them, ‘You’ve made history, and you’ve made us all very proud.’
The call took place as the Orion spacecraft began its three-day trek back to Earth following its historic lunar flyby. During the conversation, the President highlighted the mission's achievement in breaking the 56-year-old distance record set by Apollo 13, reaching a peak of over 252,000 miles from Earth.
‘What you are doing is a testament to American leadership and the incredible spirit of exploration,’ the President remarked, noting that the mission serves as a critical stepping stone for a crewed landing at the lunar South Pole.
The astronauts, appearing in video from the capsule, shared their experiences of the lunar far side and the breathtaking ‘Earthrise’ they witnessed. Commander Reid Wiseman thanked the President for the continued national support of the Artemis program, emphasizing that the mission’s success belongs to the thousands of engineers and scientists behind the project.
The exchange underscored the administration's focus on deep-space exploration and the geopolitical importance of the lunar mission. With the flyby complete, the crew is now preparing for a scheduled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on Friday, April 10, which will mark the official conclusion of this milestone-rich mission.
