Tokyo : Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on Tuesday that Japan is arranging a phone call with Masoud Pezeshkian as tensions continue in the Middle East.

She told parliament that Japan is seeking talks with both Iran and the United States to maintain communication during the crisis.

Earlier, Tokyo confirmed that Iran had freed a Japanese national detained since January, reportedly an NHK bureau chief.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi also held talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, expressing concern over ongoing attacks and urging de-escalation.

Japan stressed the need for diplomatic efforts, as it relies heavily on Middle East energy supplies, importing most of its oil and part of its LNG from the region.

Japan is the world’s fifth-largest oil importer, with over 90% of its oil and around 10% of its LNG sourced from the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump again criticised US allies, including Japan, for not supporting efforts related to the Iran conflict.
