WHO suspends Gaza medical evacuations after contract worker killed

The World Health Organization (WHO) has suspended all medical evacuations from the Gaza Strip following the tragic death of a contract worker on Monday. This decision halts the critical transfer of severely ill and injured patients through the Rafah crossing to Egypt, leaving thousands in a desperate state.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed devastation, confirming that while two other staff members survived uninjured, evacuations will remain paused until further notice.
The incident occurred during a ‘security event’ that reports suggest involved an Israeli strike, adding to a staggering toll of over 1,700 healthcare workers killed since late 2023. This suspension severely cripples a healthcare system already on the brink of collapse, where specialized care is virtually non-existent.
As investigations continue, the WHO maintains that humanitarian workers must be protected, reiterating that ‘peace is the best medicine’ for a population trapped in an escalating humanitarian catastrophe.
