China Calls for Stronger Trade Cooperation with US

Beijing: China has signalled its willingness to deepen economic cooperation with the United States, urging both sides to avoid “vicious competition” amid ongoing trade tensions.
Commerce Minister Wang Wentao made the remarks during a meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the sidelines of a World Trade Organization ministerial conference in Cameroon’s capital.
According to a statement from China’s commerce ministry, Wang called for stronger multilateral and regional trade cooperation, stressing the need to “properly handle” the balance between competition and collaboration.
The meeting comes ahead of a planned visit by US President Donald Trump to Beijing in mid-May, which had been delayed due to the Middle East conflict.
Trade relations between the world’s two largest economies remain fragile despite a truce reached last October and recent high-level talks in Paris involving US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
Key sticking points persist, including US tariffs, a trade imbalance favouring China, and Washington’s restrictions on advanced technology exports.
Wang also raised “grave concerns” over new US trade investigations that could lead to additional tariffs. The probes target dozens of economies, including China, and focus on issues such as forced labour and their impact on US commerce.
