Tokyo: Lawmakers in Japan’s national legislature officially reinstated Sanae Takaichi as prime minister on Wednesday, following a decisive victory in this month’s general election. Takaichi, president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was re-elected during a special session of the National Diet of Japan convened in the capital.

In the lower chamber the House of Representatives Takaichi secured a commanding majority with 354 votes, outnumbering rival candidates. A subsequent vote in the House of Councillors confirmed her position after a runoff round was necessary in the upper chamber.

The vote follows a landslide win for Takaichi’s LDP in the Feb. 8 general election, where the party captured a super-majority of seats in the lower house. That electoral strength has strengthened her mandate to lead Japan’s government and shape legislative priorities for the coming session.

Takaichi’s entire cabinet resigned as required by Japan’s constitution to make way for the re-formation of a new government. While the personnel lineup is expected to remain largely the same, party leaders indicated continuity in key ministerial roles.

At 64, Takaichi remains one of the most prominent figures in Japanese politics. First becoming prime minister in October, she is Japan’s first female premier and has pursued a conservative policy agenda, including defense, economic, and constitutional issues. Her reappointment signals broad parliamentary backing for her leadership direction.

With her party’s dominant position in the Diet, Takaichi is poised to guide deliberations on the upcoming fiscal budget and pursue strategic initiatives backed by her super-majority.
