London: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure at home after the unexpected departure of one of his closest advisers, thrusting his leadership into jeopardy and igniting calls for change from both within his party and opposition ranks.

On Sunday, Starmer’s chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, announced his resignation, saying he bore responsibility for advising the prime minister on a controversial diplomatic appointment that has triggered sustained criticism. McSweeney’s exit came as adverse public reaction intensified over former Labour official Peter Mandelson’s links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which were detailed in recently released documents and triggered a police investigation.

The following day, the government’s communications director Tim Allan also stepped down, saying he wanted to allow the formation of a “new No 10 team.” The back-to-back resignations have underscored concerns over Starmer’s judgment and internal cohesion at the heart of the UK government.

Pressure for change has grown louder beyond personnel shifts. Anas Sarwar, leader of Scottish Labour, publicly urged Starmer to step aside, describing the government’s leadership vacuum as a distraction from key political priorities. Several Labour MPs are now openly questioning whether Starmer can retain authority over his party.

Despite these developments, senior ministers have rallied behind Starmer, and he has repeatedly stated he will continue in his role, urging colleagues to focus on delivering the government’s agenda. However, critics from both the opposition and parts of his own party warn that the ongoing controversy could erode public trust and weaken his premiership heading into future political battles.
